Chicago has long been a home for gospel, soul, and R&B. Aaron Sledge and BJ the Chicago Kid grew up in that tradition, and now the two brothers ihave come together on their first personal collaboration: a contemporary gospel record titled Masterpiece. “This record was like one of the first times that we did something personal together,” Sledge said on The Chundria Brownlow Show. “We’ve worked together in different aspects, but this is the first time we got a chance to really say, ‘Hey, let’s do this.’”
For BJ, the gospel heart of the song is clear. “We wanted to make sure that when people heard Masterpiece, they knew they were one,” he explained. “It’s like a reminder that even in your flaws, even in your mistakes, you are still exactly what God made you to be, a masterpiece.” This message echoes the roots they share as Chicago artists raised in the church. “The city raised us, from the churches to the choirs to the neighborhoods, and it’s in everything we do, so bringing that spirit to this record makes it feel even more real,” Sledge said. BJ added that their collaboration is more than music. “Music is bigger than us,” he said. “When you get two brothers who love this city and love this craft, it’s not just about the song, it’s about giving something back.” Masterpiece is not just another single. It is a gospel declaration. “We all need a reminder that we’re worthy, we’re beautiful, and we’re art,” BJ said. “That’s what this song is about.”
Together, Aaron Sledge and BJ the Chicago Kid are carrying forward Chicago’s gospel legacy with a record that affirms, uplifts, and heals.
