Candice Scarborough’s path into technology didn’t begin in a classroom—it began in the late-night hum of a cable company office, where her single mother was troubleshooting a major pay-per-view outage. At just ten years old, Candice was typing commands, running between rooms, and discovering the joy of solving complex problems. That night sparked a lifelong love for technology and innovation.

Today, as Director of Cybersecurity and Software Engineering, Candice carries that same curiosity into every challenge. “Every problem I approach with curiosity,” she said. “And I try to leave things better than I found them.” That approach extends to the way she thinks about representation in tech. “If we don’t have everyone at the table, then we’re missing voices, we’re missing perspectives,” she said. “That includes race, gender, age, ability—everyone.”

She’s also intentional about how companies approach hiring and culture. “We’ve got to stop thinking about culture fit and think about culture add,” Candice said. “When we do that, we build stronger teams.”

On career paths, she’s quick to challenge the idea that there’s only one right way to break into the industry. “Whether it’s a degree, whether it’s certifications, whether it’s you taught yourself—be willing to learn, be willing to adjust, be willing to try things,” she advised. “Tech is constantly changing.” Mentorship, she added, is critical for creating lasting change. “We can’t just hire people from underrepresented communities and throw them into the deep end,” she said. “We’ve got to support them, we’ve got to give them opportunities to grow.”
