Spelman College is about to make graduation weekend unforgettable. This May, the school welcomes none other than Taraji P. Henson—the award-winning actress, producer, author, and mental health advocate—as the keynote speaker for its 138th Commencement Ceremony.
Let’s talk about a full-circle moment. Henson, a proud HBCU alum herself, will take the stage on Sunday, May 18, 2025, to celebrate the largest graduating class in Spelman history—694 students strong. That’s 694 brilliant, accomplished women stepping out into the world with degrees in hand and purpose in their hearts.
And Spelman is honoring Henson right back: she’ll also receive a Doctor of Fine Arts honorary degree, recognizing her iconic performances in Hidden Figures, Empire, The Color Purple, and more, as well as her unwavering commitment to destigmatizing mental health conversations in Black communities.
What makes this moment even more powerful? Henson’s presence speaks volumes about what it means to use your platform with purpose. Her work through the Boris L. Henson Foundation has changed lives and opened up necessary conversations around therapy, healing, and self-worth—especially for those who often feel unseen.
In the words of Interim President Rosalind “Roz” Brewer, a Spelman alum herself:
“Her brilliance on screen is matched by her commitment to advocacy and empowerment… Her presence and voice will undoubtedly inspire our graduates, their families, and the entire Spelman community.”
But the inspiration doesn’t stop there.
On Saturday, May 17, graduates will gather for the Baccalaureate Ceremony, featuring another phenomenal speaker: Dr. Thema Bryant. She’s a licensed psychologist, ordained minister, and professor at Pepperdine University—and she’s known for helping people heal at the intersection of faith and psychology. Her message will be one of reflection, transformation, and preparing for what’s next.
Oh, and did we mention? This powerhouse class includes not one but four valedictorians. Talk about raising the bar.
With speakers like Taraji P. Henson and Dr. Thema Bryant on the roster, this isn’t just a graduation ceremony—it’s a celebration of Black brilliance, sisterhood, and leadership in action.
We’re cheering for every member of Spelman’s Class of 2025. This is your time. Go out there and shine.
